One of the earliest expressions of the Greek Revival to appear in New Orleans. It is a dynamic community grounded in a strong sense of tradition. Some of its homes are still known by the names of the families that built them over a century ago, and official flags designating Mardi Gras Royalty are a common sight here during Carnival season.

Cemeteries. Because the city is built on a swamp, the deceased have to be buried above ground here in elaborate stone crypts and mausoleums. Over time the cemeteries, with elaborate sculptures and other decorative artwork embellishing the tombs, have come to come to resemble small villages.

One of the most luxurious hotels on Bourbon Street, The Royal Sonesta Hotel, opened in 1969. The architectural style of the hotel is one that is unique to New Orleans. The exterior was designed to look like a typical 1830s row of houses.
